Encinitas Artist Painting 72-Foot Mural in Mission Valley Pedestrian Tunnel
Encinitas artist and muralist Kevin Anderson is nearing completion of a colossal 72-foot-long, 270-degree mural in a pedestrian tunnel in the Civita community in Mission Valley.
The mural depicts the diversity of San Diego County from the desert to the ocean and highlights “places to go and things to do” in the far-flung county.
Anderson is illustrating dozens of points of interest, including Cabrillo National Park, the Star of India, Hotel del Coronado, hang gliders at Torrey Pines, the San Diego Zoo and desert bighorn sheep in Borrego Springs.
The artist said he comfortable painting the county’s diverse landscape because “when I’m not painting murals, I’m out with an easel painting my favorite places in San Diego.”
During his decades-long career, Anderson has painted numerous murals, including ones at Navy installations in Coronado, Caesars Palace and Harrah’s in Las Vegas, and in restaurants and private homes.
The tunnel is open to the public and located at the top of the stairs at the north end of Civita Park. The mural is scheduled to be complete in early June.
Civita is a new urban village that is replacing a former sand and gravel quarry. Plans for the 230-acre property call for 4,780 homes and apartments, 480,000 square feet of shops and 420,000 square feet of offices.
